If you
have ever wanted to make a lasting
contribution to education in Boston,
now is the time and this is the opportunity. It
is expensive to open a high-quality center
and the CCNS needs community support right now.
Initial
Costs
The
initial costs of opening a nonprofit school are
overwhelming. Aside from more than $15,000 in startup costs (such as
registering
as a nonprofit, licensing, insurance), we had more than $25,000 in
renovations
in the only urban space that we could afford. All these costs were
accrued
even before securing many classroom materials. As a result, we have had
to be
creative by borrowing books, technology and other basics. We would like
to
reach a point where we are able be more self-sufficient. We also are
spending
the last quarter of 2007 trying to recover most of our renovation costs
so that
we can be more financially sound.
CCNS
is not just any preschool. It
is rooted in the world-renowned
Reggio-Emilia approach. The
curriculum emphasizes scientific inquiry, fine art and global topics. Equally important, it is run
as a cooperative,
forging strong connections between parents, the community and the
school. Charlestown
families can walk their children to school and reap the benefits of
city living
by continuing their education at museums and parks. In the long term, we plan
for CCNS to
become an early education center that offers a range of enrichment
programs for
ages 0-5.
While
young children are at the core of our
program, we know that CCNS will greatly improve the
neighborhood for
everyone. Families
who can walk to work,
raise children and become involved in civic life are vital to the
development
of our community. We
believe that
expanding preschool options is a first step to reducing urban flight. We also believe that expanding our
preschool
options here in Charlestown
will help build a more vibrant community.
For
us, this project represents a turning point for
young families in our neighborhood and sends a strong message to
families
throughout Boston. CCNS families have dedicated
their talent,
resources and energy to improve this urban community. This is a
remarkable
example of urban innovation, perseverance and community involvement. Now is the moment to
support the work, commitment
and dedication of the families who have created this cooperative – and
to
encourage families in other neighborhoods to do the same.
We
have raised more than $20,000 to cover start-up
costs and we have designed a business plan to guarantee that CCNS is
self-sustaining; but in order to ensure that the center reaches its
potential,
we need approximately $75,000 in additional infrastructure funds to pay
for
renovations, technology, furnishings, educational materials and books. We cannot cover these
costs in tuition if we
are going to make this school affordable for young families.
